The road out
M25 to the M20 and the Folkestone shuttle. Hungary sits at the far end of a long run across Belgium, Germany and Austria, so the crossing choice matters less than the driving-hours plan, which is settled before the load is built.
From Calais the A16 and E40 run through Belgium to Aachen, then the German A4 and A3 past Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg. The A3 and A8 continue to Salzburg and into Austria, where the A1 runs east past Linz and Vienna to the Hungarian border. The M1 then carries the load through Győr to Budapest; Debrecen and Szeged follow the M3 and M5.

Hungary applies the standard transfer-of-residence relief on used household effects. The Hungarian system runs on an address card and a tax identification number, and the file is proportionate — the awkward part of a Hungarian move is the building, not the border.

The courtyard, the stairs and the lift
A classic Budapest apartment building is arranged around a courtyard, with open galleried walkways serving the flats and a stone staircase at one corner. It is one of the most attractive residential forms in Europe and it is a genuine problem for furniture.
The lift, where there is one, was usually fitted into the stairwell long after the building went up, which means a car barely large enough for two people and a door opening smaller again. Measure both, separately, and send photographs of the stairwell and the courtyard entrance at the viewing stage.
Where a piece will not go up the stairs, the answer is generally an external lift to a window or a gallery, and it needs arranging in advance along with permission to close part of the courtyard while it happens. In other words: another building, another set of permissions — exactly like the London end.

Is an external lift normal there?
Common enough to be routine rather than exotic, and it needs booking along with permission to occupy part of the courtyard or pavement while it is up.

Can you do a part-load?
Yes. Traffic on this corridor is regular enough that shared loads run usefully often, which makes a part-load genuinely good value.

Are UK appliances worth taking?
Hungary runs the continental plug and voltage standard. Smaller items with adaptors are fine; large white goods rarely repay the space over that distance.

What about the London end?
As demanding as ever. The bay suspension, the building booking and the managing agent's certificate are required whether the load is going to Hackney or to Budapest.
